Sharing and Technology Enhancing Local Library Access (STELLA) is a nonprofit library consortium providing services to 43 member libraries throughout Middlesex, Monmouth and Union counties. They were established in 1986 as "Libraries of Middlesex Automation Consortium" and went through a rebranding to STELLA in 2024. Their primary purpose is to operate a shared library software for their members and to promote all aspects of cooperative automated projects and resource sharing so that a higher quality of library services will be provided to residents within their service area.
STELLA strives to advance shared access for libraries through cutting-edge technology. Their online catalog provides search results closer to what users expect, including results that let patrons select their desired format (Book, eBook, Audiobook, and more!). Patrons are able to browse both physical and digital content and even start reading an eBook within their web browser! Additionally, digital collections are a growing part of what their member libraries offer. eLibraryNJ.com provides a vast collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines that can be read in the Libby app. Hoopla provides digital TV shows, movies, comic books and more - all available with a library card! Member library cardholders also have access to "STELLA", their mobile app which connects patrons with their registered library and a wealth of programs and other services.
People who work in Edison, such as our neighbors here in Raritan Center, are eligible for a library card from the Edison Public Library - although if you live in one of the 43 communities served by STELLA, you already have access to all of our resources and services.
Today's libraries are deeply-rooted community centers that act as more than just a lending library for books, movies, and music (though they provide that, too, with access to over 3.5 million items). All of their libraries offer robust programs and events, from health and wellness workshops to arts and culture lectures, as well as practical courses in language, job hunting, and much more. They offer spaces for collaboration, support for research and technology, and they connect people with information and ideas. If you have searched a library catalog from one of their member libraries, you have used their services!
To assist their libraries in reaching their goals, STELLA develops, maintains, and provides technological expertise; offers affordable, cost effective services to its member libraries; supports additional value-added services in the areas of collection development, continuing education for staff and trustees, marketing, consulting, and state and national library advocacy.
As the importance of libraries grows, STELLA continues to evolve and promote the vital role libraries play in the 21st century.
If you haven't visited your local library in a while, you might be surprised to find what awaits you— stop by and see! Visit their website at www.stellanj.org and sign up for a library card.
